ping

By Dave Spohn, About.com

Definition: Technically speaking, ping is the time it takes for a request to reach the server and travel back to the client, expressed in milliseconds. A low ping results in faster online gameplay, and gives some players a significant advantage over others. High bandwidth Internet connections such as cable and DSL typically provide lower pings than standard dial-up connections.
