DKP - dragon kill points

By Dave Spohn, About.com

Definition: DKP is an acronym for Dragon Kill Points, which is a system for distributing loot among members of a guild in an online game. Players are awarded points for participating in guild-related tasks such as raids, which they can then spend on items that drop during these events. Players with the most DKP are given priority over those with the least. The system allows loot to be distributed based on participation rather than by rolling random numbers or using other means. Many different variations on the system have been devised to suit the needs of specific guilds and games.

DKP originated in EverQuest, and is generally attributed to a character named Thott from the guild Afterlife. At the time EverQuest had only two bosses that required a large group of players to defeat: the dragons Lady Vox and Lord Nagafen.
