MMORPGs: Solo vs. Group

It's typical to be able to solo all the way to the level cap in today's MMORPGs, which is a little ironic given that they are "massively multiplayer" games. Some earlier games gave players little choice but to form groups, and there are those that would like to see a return to that approach. Is there a happy medium to be achieved between solo and group content in MMORPGs?
