Steam Group Boycotts Left 4 Dead 2
Monday June 8, 2009
Among the deluge of game news that came out of E3 2009 was Valve's announcement that they are working on a sequel to Left 4 Dead, and not everyone is happy about it. In fact, a Steam Group of active L4D players have started a boycott of Left 4 Dead 2. They are concerned that a sequel will dilute the L4D community, that the content promised for L4D2 does not warrant a full-priced sequel, and that the original game should be better supported. The group has been growing by leaps and bounds, currently numbering over 18,000 boycotters.

The problem is that Valve assured its customers/community that it would produce downloadable content in support of the Left 4 Dead title in the same manner that it has operated over the course of its existence. Any DLC to this point has been patches, completing the core game by adding two of the original campaigns to VS. mode and a paltry if insignificant ‘Survival mode’ with one custom ‘map’ that is no bigger than a large room in any one of the campaigns.
“So each time we’ve released one of those for Team Fortress 2 we’ve seen about a 20% increase in the number of people who are playing online. And that number is really important because it determines how many community created maps there are, how many servers are running, and so on. So we’ll do the same thing with Left 4 Dead where we’ll have the initial release and then we’ll release more movies, more characters, more weapons, unlockables, achievements, because that’s the way you continue to grow a community over time.” – Gabe Newell, 2008
Just watched the gameplay videos on Youtube.
Two words: Fiddles…. Yuck.
Are hillbillies going to jump out of the trees and sodomize us like the movie Deliverance? They should have some bald inbred looking zombie playing a banjo too since they seem to want to make this game appeal to slackjawed, deep south rednecks.
Also looks a lot like regular Left 4 Dead. They added some ’stuff’ which should have been in the first game and changed the characters. Oh, and it’s ‘bright’ with changing weather. Big whoop. Where’s the new game engine?
Back to the characters, they seem a little flat and generally unlikeable too.
1. Fat, bored sounding black guy
2. Hyperactive cracker that sounds and looks like a deep south version of the scout from tf2
3. Annoying sleazeball used car salesman in an ill fitting suit
4. Screechy black chick
Wow. I can’t wait to play this game! (that’s sarcasm for those who don’t recognize it)
I’ll pass thanks. No way I’m paying $50+ for no substantial improvements and having to listen to fiddles and hicks.
