Over on Newsweek's Level Up blog they've posted a lengthy four-part interview (part 1
, part 2
, part 3
, and part 4
) with Bill Roper, the CEO of Flagship Studios, also famous for his work on several Blizzard franchises. Hellgate: London, an action RPG with both a single-player mode and a multiplayer online component, will be Flagship's first big release. They're trying a slightly different business model which allows people to play online for free, but gives them the option to subscribe for some extras. "It was very, very important for us to be able to come up with a way to actually provide even more of an experience than we did with Diablo 2, with Hellgate: London. Basically, we noticed people had a lot of expectations from the team because of what we did with the Diablo series. Part of that was the ability to when they got the game, having that single-player experience and then being able to take that and go online and have that experience for free.... But we also knew that we needed to be able to evolve with the online expectations of players and be able to have a methodology to do ongoing content. That's something that we used to get a lot of requests for with Diablo 2."
Looks like they are now accepting beta sign-ups on the official site
