Star Trek Online Survey

Friday December 2, 2005
Star Trek Online recently hired Nielsen Media Research to conduct a survey to evaluate the potential of their product, and although the sample was relatively small, 69% of the MMO gamers polled expressed an interest in the game. Perhaps more surprising is the number of people that have a desire to play as the Borg. They've put a positive spin on the results, but it seems to me that MMORPGs built around television and movie franchises are a very risky business. Star Wars Galaxies, for example, enjoyed tremendous amounts of interest prior to release, but that failed to translate into subscribers at the end of the day. It's no simple task to satisfy fans who come to the game with expectations of being the next Captain Kirk, only to discover that the role of Ensign Crusher is all that is available.
