D&D Online Preview

Tuesday August 16, 2005
Can table top Dungeons & Dragons be transformed into a good massively multiplayer online game? D&D Online: Stormreach won't be the first computer game to use the D&D rule set, but it will be the first MMORPG to take this approach. GameSpot has spent a little time with this upcoming title from Turbine. "But all of the game's instanced adventures are referred to as 'dungeons' regardless of whether they're underground or not. Fortunately, the game is planned to launch with a great many of these dungeons that will not only accommodate players who may or may not have a group handy, but also those players who may not have a whole lot of time every night." Experience will be granted only for completing quests, and word on the official forum is that there is no PvP planned for game. I'm expecting it to be a cross between Neverwinter Nights and Guild Wars, without the DM client and the arenas, of course.
