Women Gamers Outnumber Boys
Thursday August 28, 2003
People often assume that the majority of video gamers are teenage boys. Who would have imagined that they are actually outnumbered by women gamers age 18 and older? The Entertainment Software Association recently released a poll that shatters many myths about video gamers. This Reuters story reports that "26 percent of game players are women 18 or older, while 21 percent are boys 6 to 17." As well, the average age of video game players has risen to 29. It would appear that the industry is targeting more games at women and mature players. I guess us old-timers don't have to feel like a bunch of freaks anymore!

"As a player in There, I can say with absolute certainty that not only do people pay real money to hang out and chat in a 3D world, they are doing so in a 3D world that is still in Beta, to the tune of (in some cases) hundreds of dollars. To my knowledge, there are few "long term" avvies (people who have been in-world for longer than 3 months) who have NOT paid out real money to buy items in world." - THERIAN
